Chinese-developed electric cars are now rolling off a European assembly line. In October 2026, Stellantis and Leapmotor officially started series production of the Leapmotor B10 electric SUV at the Figueruelas plant in Zaragoza, Spain — the same factory that builds the Opel Corsa, Peugeot 208 and Lancia Ypsilon.
Why build a Chinese EV in Spain?
Building the B10 locally helps Stellantis shorten supply chains and avoid the EU tariffs placed on electric vehicles imported from China. Zaragoza was chosen for its quality, spare capacity and industrial know-how. The B10 is a five-seat, 4.52-metre SUV offered in Spain as a full electric or an extended-range electric (REEV) version, both with 218 hp, at around €24,000 after incentives.
More Leapmotor models are set to follow: the B05, B03X and B03 are planned for European production from next year.
Stellantis' European factory network
- Spain: Figueruelas (Zaragoza)
- Italy: Pomigliano d'Arco and others
- France, Germany and the UK
Brands produced or engineered heavily in Europe include Peugeot, Citroën, Fiat, Opel, Vauxhall, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, DS Automobiles, Abarth and Maserati. Stellantis has also announced a new affordable electric car project for Pomigliano d'Arco in Italy, scheduled for production by 2028.
The "Made in Europe" push
Stellantis has joined Volkswagen and Renault in backing the EU's "Made in Europe" framework to protect and grow local car manufacturing. It is pushing for a benchmark where 70% of vehicles sold across the 27 EU member states meet strong local content and production rules. Alongside Renault, it has also urged policymakers to keep the UK car industry inside European supply-chain protections.
What it means for Australia
Leapmotor is already on sale in Australia, and more affordable electric SUVs mean more drivers can switch to zero-emission cars. Electric cars like these can qualify for LEFKO EKO, our fully electric ride option — and drivers on LEFKO keep 80% of every fare.
