Brisbane's 6-Minute Battery: Inside GMG and UQ's Graphene Aluminium-Ion Cell

Some of the most exciting battery work in the world is happening right here in Queensland. Brisbane-based Graphene Manufacturing Group (GMG), working with the University of Queensland (UQ), is developing a graphene aluminium-ion battery that could change how fast cars, phones and power tools recharge.
Why it matters
- Ultra-fast charging: in lab testing the cells reach a full charge in roughly 6 minutes — up to 70 times faster than standard lithium-ion.
- Longer life: GMG reports up to three times the life cycle of typical lithium-ion cells.
- Safer and greener: aluminium is abundant, stable and easy to recycle, removing lithium's fire risk and Australia's reliance on overseas lithium supply chains.
Where it's up to in 2026
In April 2026 GMG said it had doubled the energy density of its six-minute charging cell (GMG). In October it reported a further 48% jump to 58 Wh/kg at a 10C charge rate, 94% energy efficiency, and 1,000 cycles with no performance loss — while a well-known lithium titanate cell tested the same way fell to 80% capacity within 82 cycles (Graphene-Info).
Shortly after, GMG shipped its first G+CELLS pouch cells to customers for real-world testing (Graphene-Info). Energy density is still well below lithium-ion EV cells, so early uses are likely to be devices and applications that value speed and safety over range.
Other Brisbane battery innovators
- Li-S Energy — developing lithium-sulphur batteries strengthened with boron nitride nanotubes for higher capacity and better cycle stability.
- Vaulta — a Brisbane startup making lightweight composite battery casings that improve heat performance, cut weight and make packs easier to recycle.
What it means for drivers
For rideshare and delivery drivers, charging time is lost earning time. A battery that tops up in minutes and lasts years longer could one day make EVs even cheaper to run. LEFKO will keep following this home-grown Queensland technology — and our electric LEFKO Comfort EKO riders and drivers are already part of that future.
